The New York Yankees edged the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium, but the highlight of the night wasn’t a hit or a home. It was the defensive wizardry of Masyn Winn. It’s one thing to have the skill, athleticism and hand-eye-coordination to play all-star defense, but to also have the mental acuity to make a defensive play like that puts him in all-world status.

Pallante Battles Hard, Masyn Winn Steals the Show
Andre Pallante got the start for St. Louis and, despite a horrible first inning (giving up three runs), worked his way through five gritty innings, keeping the game close despite traffic on the bases. But the moment that had fans buzzing came in the third inning when Jasson Domínguez tried to steal second.
Pedro Page’s throw down sailed high — it looked like trouble. But Winn never gave up on the play. He adjusted, scooped the errant throw, and stayed with it. Domínguez slid past the bag, and Winn was able to recover in time to put a tag on the Bronx Bomber as he lost contact with the base. Instead of a stolen base, Busch Stadium erupted in cheers for what might be the smartest defensive play of the Cardinals’ season.
That heads-up tag erased a Yankee threat and kept the Cardinals alive.
Cardinals Find Clutch Hits but Come Up Short
The offense finally broke through against New York’s pitching in the middle innings. Masyn Winn got things rolling in the sixth with a double that scored Nootbaar to put the Cardinals on the board. Then in the seventh, it was Victor Scott II with a double that scored Jordan Walker. A wild pitch scored Pages. The energy in Busch was electric. It seemed the Cardinals were about to pull off an amazing comeback against the Yankees. But that was the end of the scoring for the Cardinals, and they ended the game a run short.
