On Roberto Clemente Day, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that Brendan Donovan is their 2025 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One—an honor that celebrates players who embody leadership, character, and a commitment to serving their communities.
Clemente’s name carries weight beyond baseball. The Hall of Famer wasn’t just a star on the field; he was a trailblazer off the field for Latin American players and a humanitarian who used his platform to uplift others. Clemente died tragically on December 31, 1972 in a plane crash while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua—an act of service that remains his lasting legacy. In his honor, Major League Baseball renamed its Commissioner’s Award in 1973, creating the annual Roberto Clemente Award.
Donovan’s nomination reflects the way he brings the same focus he shows on the field to his off-field efforts. Through his program “Donovan’s Dugout,” he hosts children at Busch Stadium, while also backing organizations like the Kaufman Fund and Team Red, White & Blue in support of veterans. He’s been active in mental health advocacy, Make-A-Wish partnerships, as well as charity walks and clay shoots.

“Roberto Clemente set the standard for what it means to give back,” Donovan said. “It’s an honor to be nominated for this award. Supporting causes that matter—especially those tied to veterans and local communities—is something I’m proud to do.”
The Cardinals have a rich history with this award, boasting six past winners including Adam Wainwright (2020), Yadier Molina (2018), Albert Pujols (2008), and Lou Brock (1975)—the most of any MLB franchise. Just another example of Brendan Donovan personifying the ‘Cardinal Way.’
