When Will JJ Wetherholt Be Called Up?

There is no Absolute Formula to when JJ Wetherholt hits the Big Club, but this a Good Guess

Cardinals fans are buzzing, and for good reason — JJ Wetherholt might be the next big thing in St. Louis. If it were up to the Redbird faithful, he’d already be in the lineup. But hold your horses — the rookie sensation’s MLB debut is still at least a few weeks away… maybe. So when will JJ be called up?

So when could Wetherholt finally make his big-league entrance? If history — and the Masyn Winn playbook — is any guide, late August could be the sweet spot. Remember Winn’s debut on August 18, 2023? The Cardinals got him acclimated to the show without burning his rookie eligibility, setting him up for a full Rookie of the Year run the next season. Although, we all have to hope Wetherholt fairs a little better in 2025 than Winn did in 2023 if the Cardinals want to make the Wild Card. Although Winn shows no ill effects of that sub par 2023 partial season. In fact, that horrendous start to his career may have been a boon to learn and grow from.

And here’s where it gets interesting with JJ.

MLB’s Prospect Promotion Incentive rules

If a top-100 prospect (Wetherholt is top 20 everywhere, top five on some lists) starts the season on the roster and wins Rookie of the Year, the team gets a bonus draft pick. That’s the kind of incentive front offices dream about. To keep him eligible, Wetherholt can’t exceed 45 active days before September 1 or 130 at-bats in 2025. Translation? A debut in that late August series against the Pittsburgh Pirates means he could get a ton of playing time but not exceed the 130 at-bat cap.

The catch? Wetherholt has been tearing up Triple-A Memphis, hitting like he’s been there for years, but it’s still a small sample. What if he is called up before there is a regression to the mean and he comes back to earth in terms of productivity along with having the big lights shining on him?

BUT, what if he keeps doing this like he did yesterday on 8/12/25:

What if Arenado is Back when JJ is Called Up?

Oh, and let’s not forget Nolan Arenado. If the veteran gets healthy around the same time, Marmol has said Arenado plays. That could limit Wetherholt’s at-bats.

Still, if the Cardinals see the value, they’ll make it happen. JJ Wetherholt isn’t just another prospect — he’s a potential cornerstone for the franchise. And if late August really is the plan for him to be called up, Busch Stadium could be getting ready for one of its most electric debuts in years.

Quick update: Mozeliak is hinting at a 2026 callup for JJ, not 2025
