Nolan Gorman Cinches Cards Win over Cubs: 3.5 Games out of the Wild Card

Cardinals Take Series From Cubs Behind Sonny Gray’s Dominance and Nolan Gorman Late Inning RBI

The St. Louis Cardinals punched back in a big way, taking two of three from the Chicago Cubs thanks to a vintage Sonny Gray outing and a clutch late hit from Nolan Gorman to seal a 3-2 Cards win at Busch Stadium.

Gorman’s story was pure baseball drama—after a costly error at third earlier in the game, he stepped up in the eighth inning with two outs and laced a go-ahead RBI single. Jordan Walker set the stage, ripping a base hit and swiping second to get into scoring position for Gorman’s redemption moment.

Sonny Gray is a Huge in Cards Win

On the mound, Gray was locked in. The Cardinals ace carved through Chicago’s lineup over seven innings, allowing just five hits and two runs (only one earned) while striking out seven and walking one. The lone blemish came on a solo shot from Cubs rookie Matt Shaw, but Gray kept the rest of the damage to a minimum.

Pedro Pages provided an early spark for St. Louis with a two-run blast off Cubs starter Shota Imanaga, who was excellent in his own right—striking out nine without a walk in 6.2 innings. Still, the Cardinals’ timely hitting made the difference.

JoJo Romero handled the tense final outs after Riley O’Brien set the table in the eighth. Chicago threatened in the ninth, with Shaw coming up again as the potential hero, but Romero induced a harmless ground ball to second to shut the door.

Time to Rock the Rockies

With the win, St. Louis moves to 60-59 and just 3.5 games behind the Mets for the final NL Wild Card spot—leapfrogging the Giants and staying in striking distance of the Reds. The Cardinals now turn their attention to a homestand against the Rockies before welcoming the Yankees in a weekend showdown.

The Cubs, meanwhile, fall to 67-50, still holding a comfortable Wild Card lead but losing ground in the NL Central race.
