The St. Louis Cardinals have been dealt a brutal blow to their future pitching plans with Tommy John Surgery required.
Cardinals pitching prospect, Tekoah Roby, the club’s No. 6 prospect and one of the organization’s breakout arms in 2025, has undergone Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss the remainder of this season, all of 2026, and potentially won’t return to the mound until 2027 as reported by Katie Woo of The Athletic.
“St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Tekoah Roby underwent Tommy John surgery and will likely not pitch until 2027,” the report reads, citing multiple team sources. The 23-year-old was placed on the injured list July 14 and underwent the procedure on Friday.

Roby was originally acquired by St. Louis in the 2023 trade that sent Jordan Montgomery to the Texas Rangers. After a rocky start in his first year with the organization — posting a 6.57 ERA in 10 starts — Roby made significant strides in 2025.

He began the year with Double-A Springfield, where he dominated across 10 starts, putting up a 2.49 ERA and earning a promotion to Triple-A Memphis in June and has held a respectable 4.02 ERA over six starts. Across both levels, Roby compiled a 3.10 ERA with 87 strikeouts and 19 walks in 78 1/3 innings.
The Cardinals pitching timeline just got completely scrambled with the Roby injury and recovery date sometime in 2027.
