Will Arenado Veto Another Trade to the Astros?
With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Houston Astros are urgently exploring infield upgrades following a potentially serious hamstring injury to third baseman Isaac Paredes. The Astros are exploring several veteran options to fill the void—and one of the names in the mix is St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado.
Or will the Tigers nab the gold glover along with another Cardinals All-Star?

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Astros are weighing a move for either Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa or Arenado. While Correa would require a shift to third base as well as carrying over $100 million remaining on his contract. Arenado presents a more natural fit at third and comes at a significantly lower price tag—owed $56 million through 2027.
The Cardinals 3rd baseman has struggled at the plate this season. He’s slashing just .235 with a .664 OPS and an 86 OPS+ (14% below league average). Offensively tied for the second-worst year of his career. However, his elite defense and playoff experience still make him an appealing deadline option for a contender like Houston.
The Dreaded No-Trade Clause
One major hurdle for any Arenado trade has always been his full no-trade clause. Earlier this year, he reportedly used it to veto a deal that would’ve sent him to Houston. But, as Nightengale now reports, both Arenado and Correa “likely would be willing to waive their no-trade clauses to join the Astros.”

That change in stance may reflect the Astros’ improved standing. Sitting atop the AL West and positioned to make another postseason push, Houston is once again a desirable destination for veterans chasing a title.
The Cardinals and Astros already explored this scenario in the offseason, so there’s a groundwork in place. While the players involved in any potential package will look different this time around. Familiarity between the front offices could streamline talks.
If Houston is determined to upgrade their infield in pursuit of another World Series run, a deal for Arenado could come together quickly.
