Adam Wainwright Makes Wacky Prediction About the Cardinals Chances at Postseason Play… But is it that Wacky?

Date:

Adam Wainwright has Faith in the Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals may have sold at the trade deadline, but don’t tell Adam Wainwright the season’s over. The franchise legend took to Twitter/X with a bold — no, wild — postseason prediction that has fans buzzing.

And he knows how to get fans buzzing. Like when he came out of retirement earlier this season.

“I’m looking at the schedule,” Wainwright posted. “I’m calling it now. The @Cardinals shock everybody and are playing for a wild card spot on the last series of the season against the @Cubs. Cubs-Cards last 3 days of the regular season would be wild.”

That’s right — Waino isn’t saying they’ll win it all, but he’s betting the Cardinals will head into that season-ending showdown with Chicago right on the doorstep of the postseason. And you know what? He might not be crazy.

A not so Wacky Prediction

Right now, St. Louis sits 14 games back in the NL Central, so chasing the Milwaukee Brewers is out of the question. But the wild card? That’s still alive and well. The Cardinals are just 4.5 games back, and their remaining schedule is softer than what the Cincinnati Reds, Brewers, and New York Mets will face down the stretch.

The Mets are slumping, the Reds are only two games ahead, and while the Cubs, Padres, and Dodgers have cupcake schedules left, the door isn’t completely closed. If the Cubs falter, that final series in late September could have massive playoff implications — just like Adam Wainwright envisions.

And remember, Oli Marmol’s squad has already punched above its weight this season. If they take the series from the Cubs on Sunday, they’ll have back-to-back series wins over both the Dodgers and Cubs. Momentum? Yeah, it’s possible.

Wainwright’s prediction is bold, maybe even a little wacky — but for Cardinals fans craving October baseball, it’s exactly the kind of hope they needed… And not all that wacky!
