The Season is Over for the Cardinals Top Star

Date:

The St. Louis Cardinals have officially shut down shortstop Masyn Winn for the remainder of the 2025 season, and the news isn’t pretty.

Winn, who’s been battling a nagging meniscus tear, will undergo arthroscopic surgery in the coming days, per St. Louis Post-Dispatch‘s Derrick Goold. The club had hoped he could finish the year, but his recovery stalled—and now, the plug has been pulled.

Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat confirmed Friday night that Winn’s season is over. He was scratched from the lineup—again—after multiple attempts to tough it out through the injury. This time, it’s final.

The 22-year-old finishes his year slashing .253/.297/.376 with 9 home runs and a .673 OPS. But the real story? His glove. Winn turned heads across the league with elite defensive metrics. According to FanGraphs, he led all MLB shortstops with 22 Outs Above Average and racked up a 17 Fielding Run Value. Don’t be surprised if he’s in the Gold Glove conversation despite the shortened season. Maybe a Platinum Glove?

Now stepping into the role: Thomas Saggese. The 23-year-old utility man has hit just .251 with a lone homer and a .618 OPS, but he’ll get the final stretch of games as a starting shortstop.

The Cardinals, sitting at 72–76 and effectively out of postseason contention, don’t have much left to play for. But all eyes will be on Saggese’s performance and, more importantly, Winn’s recovery timeline. The team expects Winn to be ready for Spring Training in 2026.

A promising second full season (well, almost full) ends in surgery. And for the Cardinals? Another frustrating chapter in a forgettable season. Let’s hope Saggese can make the most with the pending dearth of playing time at the end of 2025.
